Synonym is an independent arts and culture print and on-line magazine serving the global immigrant and third-culture diaspora. We exist to amplify the voices of those who live between cultures—immigrants who have built new identities from the spaces in between. Through stories, essays, interviews, and food as a universal language, we create a platform where overlooked communities find belonging, visibility, and power.
We center community and the community experience of those underserved and underrepresented by vigorously seeking out and commissioning writers and contributors from the global majority, who are otherwise marginalized and often overlooked, while having an editorial team of 80% people of color, we very intentionally solicit and collaborate with writers and contributors from the global majority.

As a magazine dedicated to telling the stories of the diaspora and immigrant cultures, this is critical: We endeavor to reflect the diversity of our audience, and it is important to us that our contributors and subjects find a sense of community and safety in having their story and vision told by the people that look like them and from within their communities. And, for us, we want to show that a BIPOC-led magazine about food culture is not only possible, it’s something audiences are actively seeking out. Our publication not only amplifies the experience of the diaspora through literary arts but through visual arts from our contributors that we seek out directly from the diaspora. We intentionally pair together people of the community to represent the essays etc.

These stories and this magazine is so important right now because as politics and the world become more and more divided, we’re looking to share stories where the minorities' (or global majority's) voice is being heard. The diaspora is growing and there isn’t a platform for that, we are trying to fill that gap.
